Hi, new visitors! I don't update the blog much anymore, but I am fairly active on tumbler at LivingTiny. It's a mix of stuff I like, tiny houses from around the world, and updates about the container house (usually with pictures!).

A good place to start is right at the beginning, and I hope you enjoy watching our <strike>suffering</strike> magical journey.

It's been a busy few months here in the tiny house. We've been working on a lot of personal and academic projects, so the blog fell by the wayside.

However, we did get the end caps to the kitchen cabinets put on (hooray!), but not much else.

I've taken a few pictures, though, and they can be seen on our tumblr.
I'll be posting stuff about our house that isn't really significant enough to warrant a blog update, and hopefully reblogging things about tiny living.

p.s., we hit 10,000 page views! Holy crap! Thank you all so much for looking at our little house.

On June 2nd, Alan's parents threw a graduation party for Alan's brother. With about 60 people here, most of whom had not seen the house in person, we did a lot of tours! The positive response was almost overwhelming, it was very nice not to be called crazy people! But what we did hear (mostly from people our age) is that they couldn't see how two people could live here peacefully. Well, we have a dirty little secret, and I'm going to show you some pictures of what hides in our cupboards and drawers. But first, some nice pictures and garden updates.
The bathroom as a whole is 8'x4'(approx). It was a priority of ours to make the bathroom a nice place to be/look at first thing in the morning, because that really does set the tone for your whole day.

The door/enclosure is custom by a local company. A

I love the riverrock, it's very easy to clean and doesn't show hard water spots.

No, I didn't clean up very much for these pictures, I wanted it to look like it does every day so people can see how useable it is.

Yes, two people can be in here brushing teeth/shaving/doing morning rituals, if you're friendly!

We love it!

Today we turn 1. In addition to that, it's also the 50th post on the blog!

I don't really know what to write, but I do want to thank our family and friends who have supported us so much through this. No one ever called us crazy or said we couldn't do it, and we've shown that they were right not to.

Alan and I adore our little house, and each and every time we come home it is an absolute joy. It is such a comfort to be living in a space designed and built with your own hands, to fit your exact needs and wants.

I asked Alan what he was most worried about going into this project; transcript follows:

A: "I don't know. Probably just the concerns that most people would have about living in close proximity. You know? I don't know. I guess I didn't have any worries, but I can't really say that. Does that make sense? Okay, let me think. I don't know! We always had, for two people, a big place, living on our own. So the adjustment...I was worried about the adjustment. And like previously we spent a lot of time in separate rooms, you know? And I didn't know if we were going to be able to have our separate spaces in such a tiny place. I guess."

R: "What about now? Do you think we have our own spaces?"

A: "No. I don't believe we do. Not physically, but we give each other mental and emotional space when it's needed, which is harder to do than just leaving the room. Does that make sense?"

R: "I guess. Have your worries changed?"

A: "No, in that I don't really have worries about it now. It affirms my want for a small house in the future."

R: "What's been the best part?"

A: "From a practical standpoint, probably the fact it's easy to clean. Intangibly, I think since living in some place this small..the kind of constant exposure [to one another] requires you to be very honest, I guess. We can't hold argument for a week, it's impossible. We're still learning about each other, even after 8 years. That comes, I'm sure, from talking more, which I think is a direct result of proximity."

R: What's the worst part?

A: "Um. I don't know. I mean, there's storage concerns, but that just helps us get rid of shit we don't need. I miss our old furniture. I miss having a couch."

R: "What about intangibly?"

A: "Well, there was a lot of stress, just family goings-on that would be stressful no matter where we lived, but the kinks basically seem to have worked themselves out."

R: "Is there anything you'd like to add?"

A: "I don't know. That's really hard. I don't see this as special anymore. It's just a house. I guess it's hard as far as becoming more insufferable as it comes to sustainable and greener living. Now I've done it, and I know how easy it can be, so there's really not an excuse for everyone to try."

All of what Alan said goes for me too. I can tell that over the past year we've synched up a bit in a lot of ways, because we absolutely have been communicating more. Though we do still have arguments over the color of the kitchen (I wanted Sonic Lime). We both agree that it doesn't feel like a year at all-- everything's gone by so quickly!

I had to add a chickenwire fence around the garden, since it was besieged by rabbits. It also gave us a place to put my Sulcata tortoise for the summer, who eats the crabgrass and other weeds, and is supplemented with hay.

On the south end I've planted four hops rhizomes, which seem to be doing well. The hope is to train them up to the top of the container and provide some shade for the south wall, which does get pretty warm.

And the inside, as of 5/12:
Our to-do list, for the whole property. It's a doozy!

But, I will promise, right here, under threat of..nothing.. that I will finally post pictures of our bathroom by the end of the month. And I promise it will be completely underwhelming after all this time!

Later this week I'll be posting links to the blogs and webpages we got our information from, and some wonderful new designs we've seem lately.
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-51190363369305860932012-03-24T09:43:00.001-07:002012-03-25T07:47:46.971-07:00Spring planting

It's been a while since I've posted, but we have been busy around the house!

We've mostly been busy with our new addition, a little rescued poodle mix named Stanley who is acclimating to the tiny life quite well-- since he's only 5lbs, we figured he wouldn't take up much room.
Alan picked the knobs and his dad came up with the idea that keeps our socks and underthings from intermingling. Cat is for reference purposes only, does not come with the wardrobe.

Why is our dresser gone and the bed piled with clothes?

Because we went to see some very talented workers and picked up this baby. It's a wardrobe custom built to fit our space. 48" wide and about 80" tall, it's a behemoth. We were very wrong when we thought that a small dresser would be able to hold all of our clothes, and it was getting a little ridiculous.

First, the toekick was leveled and screwed to the wall and supported at the floor.

Since there's no way we could have fit the wardrobe into the house and moved it into position in one piece, it was built in four sections. Two 16"x40" cabinets, and two 32"x40". This is the first section.

And the second, a 32" section divided into two 16" spaces. The cubby is for our alarm clock.

And this part is the best idea we've ever had. This section of cabinet has no shelves, and serves as the laundry hamper. A quick right out of the bathroom after a shower and you deposit your dirty clothes on the way to get clean ones.

The second 16" section. All of the sections are screwed to one another and the wall, and it's very solidly built.

And the last section. This is why it is built this way-- we needed to still be able to access the breaker box.

As you can see, we had our usual canine supervisory team in place.

All the sections mounted and secured, and the clock in place.

And the all important view from the bed, with all of the clean clothes put away. Much better, and a nice simple look, than a too-small dresser. We are currently brainstorming ideas to liven up the left wall a bit with a stripe of the bathroom exterior color, and/or a long shelf for display purposes. We'll see!

These are melamine covered cabinets, and the color on the front is from the Arborite company, called Tatami Wasabi. The color is probably most accurate in the first and last pictures of mine.

In the shot of the living room you can see that we have carpeted the kitchen. This was a foot-saving measure for the winter cold, and will not be permanent! A big pretty rug may eventually go there if we can find one for a decent price, though.
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-71813522856608927652012-01-09T02:23:00.000-08:002012-01-09T02:23:09.952-08:00Well, poop.

My camera has been sent of for (theoretical) repairs, but the person working the counter informed me that my warranty (which would cover the problems I was having) would likely be voided due to a crack on the back screen cover (which doesn't affect anything). The upshot of this is that we may be without a camera to call our own for a while, since we can't really afford to buy a new one right now.

In the mean time, imagine....

Our garden now has some small (~1year old) Red Hot Poker bushes, and yellow iris rhizomes with some brave little leaves on them. In there are also some clumps of pansies, and tomorrow I am adding in some small red kale plants for a bit of unique color. By our stairs are now three telephone pole pieces to hold my succulent pots, and a LARGE reclaimed section of a concrete irrigation weir which will hold some soon-to-be-determined flowering plant(s). Our front stoop area will be concrete poured around this section of weir, connecting the landing pad at the end of our steps with the walkway and 'garage floor' on the north end of the house.

I will try to borrow a camera tomorrow and get pictures of all of this.
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-84300826623804594122012-01-08T13:03:00.001-08:002012-01-08T13:03:36.102-08:00Technical problems

It's on the north end of the house, and has only two walls- west, and a roof. This blocks the worst of the prevailing wind, and the gap between the house and the wall of the garage will be blocked off soon. The very leftmost part of the inside of the carport is a big door, so we have easy access out that direction.

The intent of the blog was not only to write about the construction of a container home, but the realities of living in such a small space, and I really haven't done that. The truth is, our adjustment period was very short, and there's not much different living here. We do have a small list of things we miss:

A sofa. We currently use two Poang chairs from IKEA, and they somewhat lack the hominess of a nice sofa to snuggle on. I am absentmindedly researching very small loveseats.

An oven. We never really used one extensively in our apartment, but there are a few things we would like to cook again. I'm currently pining after a large Kitchenaid toaster oven that supposedly has the ability to bake small breads, and broil meat more quickly than our little toaster oven.

More clothes storage. We have seriously miscalculated in this respect. This is going to be rectified by building in a wardrobe of sorts where our dresser currently sits. It will consist of shelves bolted to the studs in that wall, with an end-cap on the hallway side, and some doors. This should take care of the clothes problem, in conjunction with another reduction of goods.

A larger volume of air to buffer our heating and cooling efforts.

We had to 'carpet' the big metal floor piece in the kitchen for the winter. I took a large indoor/outdoor rug and cut it to fit the area, as not only were we losing heat through it, it was quite shockingly cold to step on when feeding the cats first thing in the morning. I now occasionally have to vacuum the kitchen, which is still enough of a novelty to not be annoying.

The seating arrangement has changed, and Alan and I now sit together on the east wall, with a small table in between us. The corner that was mine is now where the heater goes, and a small indoor cat tree. We found that we liked this way quite a bit better for watching movies or "tv"(Hulu Plus) together, and never bothered to put things back.

Tomorrow is chore day, and I will post some interior and exterior pictures when everything is clean.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-7358566134258051482011-12-05T12:22:00.000-08:002011-12-05T12:22:10.671-08:00DelaysFor some reason, the carport did not come in on the 29th of last month, and now we're not sure when it will be here. In addition to that, the weather absolutely hasn't been cooperative with us. Overnight lows in the mid-teens, winds gusting to 60mph, make for generally miserable conditions to work in.

However, we have made some progress. My garden area is ready to be planted once the carport is up (I want to reduce the wind coming around the north corner, and the south corner will not be planted until spring), and we've graveled in the driveway.
The project as a whole is taking a while, but it's still quicker than conventional housing.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-18742485491090092102011-11-26T15:27:00.000-08:002012-03-25T07:52:10.812-07:00Concrete, againSome days I'm pretty sure that we like concrete too much. This is not one of those days.

We finished pouring new sidewalks, a driveway entrance pad, new fenceposts ( to section off the area over the septic tank to protect it from big trucks) and some extra sidewalk for the big house. The whole thing has taken three days total.
The sidewalks make it much easier to get around, and when it rains, will enable us to actually use the outdoors without slipping and tracking mud. The area between the two walkways in front of the tiny house will be filled with gravel as well for drainage, and will lead into our carport.

The carport materials come in on Tuesday the 29th, but I'm not sure when we'll be working on it. The interior of the house has changed a bit-- Alan and I now sit next to one another, and the corner where I was sitting is now for the radiant heater and a small cat tree. It opens up the floor quite a bit, and the cats are very happy to be able to hang out there all day.
1. Insulation is key. Our walls are equal to or greater than what's recommended for this area, and due to the large dead space underneath the house, we have been able to heat it quite comfortably with a room heater rated for 150 sq ft.
2. Finish sealing your doors before it starts getting into the 30's at night. Brrr!

We are going to be starting on our carport, sidewalk, and garden area this month, with concrete being poured next month (6-8 yards in total).

Soon, I will hopefully have pictures of our finished bathroom (because it's not quite done yet), finished base boards, and finished outside windows.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04618645397095286440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5851117727762895407.post-3984134313442972012011-08-23T16:47:00.000-07:002011-08-23T16:47:03.113-07:00Cooking In 320Well, more like ~250. I've had some people ask about the kitchen details, so I thought I would post tonight's early dinner.

Last night while watching TV, I roasted a bell pepper, some kind of sweet and very hot pepper, about half an onion, and almost a pound of tomatillos.

I threw all of that in the blender this afternoon, and made this.

I also made some rice.

"But wait", you say. "How did you roast things with no oven?"

Our valiant little toaster oven lives underneath the pots and pans, and has so far broiled chicken, baked desert, heated leftovers, and now, roasted.
The chicken tenders were pan-fried due to a time crunch-- Alan and I are back at school and he needed to leave for class.

In about two days I will finally be posting pictures of our wonderful bathroom. It took a long time to get it painted because I am lazy, and it looks quite a bit better now. Hooray, it's our 3 monthiversary!

To celebrate, I took some pictures. Here's the official, still kind of messy and no-you-can't-see-the-bathroom-until-I-paint-it tour!
Against the north wall, looking south. The computer setup seen here is also temporary. My chair (still to be purchased) goes in between the t.v. stand and the bathroom wall-- I face Alan.
